Megapixel sensor enables advanced imaging applications

Omnivision (Santa Clara, USA) has introduced a megapixel image sensor designed for image processing and sensor systems in automotive applications. Megapixel sensors are enablers for next-generation automotive look-ahead and wide-angle digital imaging applications, the company says.

The OV9710 is based on Omnivision's OmniPixel2 HS technology which allows for excellent image quality even under poor lighting conditions. Thus, the sensor can cope with all lighting situations from bright sunlight to almost complete darkness.

The device is suitable for wide-angle applications such 'bird's view' systems as well as for intelligent parking assistance systems. "One megapixel is crucial for applications where extreme wide angle (> 160 degrees) and 360 degree systems. In these applications, image data provided by the camera need to be deskewed and stitched together," explained Inayat Khajasha, Senior Automotive Product Marketing Manager for Omnivision.

The sensor is also ideal for use in automotive camera-based driver assistance systems including lane departure warning and traffic sign recognition.

The OV9710 quarter-inch device provides 8-bit and 10-bit image streams in Raw RGB format with a choice of full image, sub sampling or window mode. The data stream can be adjusted to 30 fps or in VGA format with 60 fps. Among other functions, the OV9710 supports exposition and gain adjustment, white balance, compensation for lens-induced image distortions. The functions can be controlled through the Serial Camera Control Bus (SCCB) interface.

The device comes in a lead-free QFP package and matches AEC-Q100 specifications.
