MUNICH, Germany At the Paris Auto Salon, Fiat has introduced its 'ecoDrive' software that analyzes the driver's personal driving style and supplies hints how to improve it under aspects of eco friendliness.
The software runs on Fiat's Blue&Me automotive infotainment platform; in its current version it is restricted to the models 500 and Grande Punto. The user downloads it from the Fiat website and installs it on a PC which in turn loads some routines on a USB stick which then is connected to the infotainment platform.
During driving, the system collects technical data from the car such as distances driven, gear and brake activities, engine speed and temperatures etc. After several usage periods, the user can upload these data to its PC where they are processed and used to frame out hints as how to improve the driving style.
While Blue&Me is based on Microsoft operating systems, the ecoDrive software runs in the Adobe AIR runtime environment. Fiat declines to specify if executables are loaded onto the telematics platform, which would create the potential to manipulate the onboard software and thus represent a potential security threat.
The company plans to offer the software for other models within the coming year.
