MUNICH, Germany — Automotive tier one Hella KGaA Hueck & Co (Lippstadt) and Gutmann Messtechnik GmbH (Ihringen) have launched a joint venture which aims at the market for vehicle diagnostic systems.

According to a Hella press release, the JV aims at providing garage-oriented solutions for vehicle diagnostics. The move combines the competence of Gutmann Messtechnik in the area of automotive diagnosis equipment with Hella's activities in providing vehicle service data for the OEM-independent aftermarket.

Both parent companies will own 50 percent each of the joint venture. The launch is scheduled for later in 2008, provided the antitrust authorities give a nod to the move. The JV will be headquartered in Ihringen; it plans to offer its products and services Europe-wide. "In an environment where even simple repair jobs require technical diagnostic competency, it is important to claim the leadership in this strategic field," said Juergen Behrend, general manager of Hella.

The JV plans to offer a automotive diagnosis and service equipment along with the required data services to its existing pan-European customer base of about 20.000 repair shops. Hella plans to bring its DDS data and diagnosis system into the JV's portfolio.
